Bryan Cranston, Steve Carell, and Laurence Fishburne are on a solemn mission in the first trailer for Last Flag Flying, director Richard Linklater‘s latest film.

In the same way that Everybody Wants Some! was billed as a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused, Last Flag Flying serves a similar function for Hal Ashby’s The Last Detail, a film about two navy men showing an offender one last good time before carting him off to prison. In fact, Last Flag Flying was initially a book written by author Darryl Ponicsan in 2005 as a sequel to his novel, The Last Detail.

The trio of actors portray old war buddies who served in the Vietnam War: former Navy Corps medic Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Carell), ex-Marine Sal Nealon (Cranston), and Reverend Richard Mueller (Fishburne). Thirty years after their stint, Doc seeks out his comrades to help bury his son, a young Marine who died in the Iraq War. Once there, Doc chooses to skip the burial at Arlington Cemetery and deliver his son’s casket to his New Hampshire home with the help of his friends.

Actors Yul Vazquez and Cicely Tyson also feature in the film, which is based on a script by Linklater and Ponicsan.

Last Flag Flying will have its world premiere as the opener to the New York Film Festival on Thursday, Sept. 28. Amazon Studios will then distribute the film domestically beginning Nov. 17.
