The upcoming Shaft reboot has found its lead.

EW has confirmed that Independence Day: Resurgence star Jessie T. Usher is in negotiations star in New Line’s Son of Shaft. Tim Story (Ride Along) is already on board to direct, and the film will focus on Usher’s character, the son of private detective John Shaft. Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow wrote the script.

Samuel L. Jackson played the detective in the 2000 film, starring as the nephew of the original John Shaft, and he’s also in negotiations to reprise his role for Son of Shaft. (Richard Roundtree originated the role in the 1971 Shaft, directed by Gordon Parks, and he also appeared in the 2000 version.)

Usher currently stars on Starz’s TV series Survivor’s Remorse, but he’s perhaps best known for his role as Dylan Hiller in last year’s Independence Day: Resurgence, playing the son of Will Smith’s character.

The original Shaft hit theaters in 1971, becoming a major hit and earning $13 million at the box office. Isaac Hayes’ iconic theme song also won the Academy Award for best original song. It was followed by two sequels in 1972 and 1973, until the Jackson-starring 2000 reboot, directed by John Singleton.
