Bruce Campbell to attend Alamo Drafthouse screening of Evil Dead 2 — in the woods!
What’s better than seeing Bruce Campbell play idiot-hero Ash in the woods-set horror classic Evil Dead 2 on the big screen? How about seeing the film on the big screen, in the woods, with Bruce Campbell?
EW can exclusively reveal that on Sept. 14 in Austin, TX., the Alamo Drafthouse, SYFY, and Austin’s BookPeople will take attendees deep into the woods for an outdoor screening of Sam Raimi’s 1987 film. Not only will Campbell himself be present, but Evil Dead fans will also get a copy of the actor’s new memoir Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor, the sequel to his 2001 bestseller, If Chins Could Kill.
As a certain Deadite-slaying buffoon would say: “Groovy!”
“Evil Dead 2 was like a cinematic gateway drug for so many of us, and Bruce is legend,” said Henri Mazza, Alamo Drafthouse V.P. of Special Events, in a statement. “We’ve screened all of his films and the Evil Dead franchise every which way inside our theaters, but getting to celebrate Bruce and Evil Dead 2 out in the deep, dark woods? That’s a terrifying new experience.”
This news about the Evil Dead 2 screening is part of the third wave of announcements for Alamo20, a series of events marking the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain’s 20th anniversary.
It was also announced Friday that Alamo Drafthouse and Birth.Movies.Death are celebrating Mondo’s new vinyl reissue of the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack by hosting a screening at L.A.’s Ace Hotel, Sept. 26, which will be followed by a conversation with stars Rachael Leigh Cook, Gabriel Mann, and Missi Pyle, and co-writer/directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan. Before the film, Kay Hanley of Letters To Cleo, who provided the singing voice of Josie in the film, will perform Josie and the Pussycats songs live. (Tickets for that event are available at the Ace Hotel website.)
Finally, to celebrate the 40th anniversary 4K re-release of Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alamo Drafthouse is teaming up with Sony, SYFY, and Birth.Movies.Death. to screen the film at Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower, the iconic rock formation central to the film. The event will take place on Sept. 2 and will feature mashed potato-sculpting, drones dressed as alien spacecraft, and special surprises. The screening is party of the SYFY25 screening series and camping is available nearby.
