Agent Carter loves Wonder Woman.
Or at least, the woman who plays her does. Appearing at the Television Critics Association press tour to promote her role in the new Starz adaptation of Howards End, former Peggy Carter actress Hayley Atwell responded to a question from Buzzfeed News about her thoughts on the record-breaking Wonder Woman film.
“I thought it was a triumph,” Atwell said. “I came out of that walking on air, and I think what’s brilliant about it is, it’s a genre piece, it’s a superhero movie, it’s pitch-perfect from Gal’s performance to the script to the music, it has just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humor, it’s engaging, and I was so so surprised by the end of it.”
She went on to comment about the historic nature of the film, saying, “Seventy-six years in the making, that’s breaking box-office records, and it’s led by a woman, and it’s directed by a woman — I was like, ‘Patty! F–ing! Jenkins! Yes!'”
Atwell is no stranger to female-led superhero projects, having portrayed Agent Peggy Carter in several Marvel films, including Captain America: The First Avenger, and headlining her own television show ABC’s Marvel’s Agent Carter.
She remarked on what the success of Wonder Woman means more broadly for depictions of women in the media. “What it means for all of us — because it’s not just women are great — it’s going, ‘Come on, let’s represent who we really are as women,'” she said. “They did it beautifully. Not only did they pull it off, they were just like, ‘Boom!’ They excelled.”
“I love Peggy,” she said. “I love the people that were working on this project together. The fans are incredibly warm and welcoming. And it would be an absolute privilege and honor to bring her back for the fans.”
Might we suggest an Agent Carter-Wonder Woman crossover?
