Nicholas Hoult is a tortured J.D. Salinger in Rebel in the Rye trailer
Writing a Great American Novel is far from child’s play in the new trailer for Rebel in the Rye, the upcoming biopic starring Nicholas Hoult as the acclaimed but reclusive author J.D. Salinger.
Directed and scripted by Danny Strong, Rebel follows a young Salinger as he struggles to find his voice, experiences love and war, and ultimately pens the seminal coming-of-age tale The Catcher in the Rye.
Though he has the steadfast support of his teacher Whit Burnett (Kevin Spacey), Salinger grapples with professional setbacks, his father’s expectations, his own self-doubt, and the trauma of his time on the battlefield.
And yet there’s one thing that sustains him. “Pages of this book were with me when I stormed the beaches at Normandy,” he says. “I don’t think I’d be alive if it wasn’t for this book.”
Rebel in the Rye hits theaters Sept. 15. Watch the trailer above.
