Kyle Mooney’s oddity of a dramedy Brigsby Bear touched hearts when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and movie lovers are slowly seeing why in the latest trailer.

Starring the Saturday Night Live actor, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Costello, the film mines for levity in a dark tale. A young man named James (Mooney) has been kept in seclusion at this survivalist safe house of sorts with a man played by Mark Hamill. The footage shows him strapping on a gas mask every time he goes outside, and his only source of entertainment is this ’80s television show called Brigsby Bear Adventures.

As he learns upon being thrust back into the real world, he finds the show was produced solely for him. With no new episodes to watch as he attempts his adjustment into society, he decides to share Brigsby Bear Adventures with the world and seeks to make his own movie about the character.

Beck Bennett and Andy Samberg, faces from SNL past and present, feature in supporting roles, along with Claire Danes, Michaela Watkins, Greg Kinnear, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Kate Lyn Sheil, Ryan Simpkins, and Matt Walsh. Dave McCary directs Brigsby Bear, which will premiere in select theaters on July 28.

“I like scripts that you can’t categorize easily,” Hamill said at the film’s Sundance premiere. “Your agent will call and say, ‘I have a script, it’s Die Hard in a supermarket.’ Whatever. It’s always compared to something else. I read this thing and I thought, ‘this is really original.’”

EW’s Anthony Breznican will moderate Thursday’s San Diego Comic-Con panel for the film. Mooney, McCary, Bennett, Costello, and members of The Lonely Island crew will be on hand to share an exclusive sneak peek and participate in a Q&A.
