Temperatures are low, tensions are high, and a young girl is dead. Who you gonna call? Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, of course, as evidenced by the new trailer for Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River.
Sheridan’s sophomore directorial effort — a brooding crime drama that appears to beat with the same dark heart as his previously penned screenplays for Sicario and Hell or High Water — sees the Academy Award nominee shifting his focus from the American Southwest to the frigid reaches of the frigid mountains of Wyoming, where a disturbing murder has rocked the film’s titular Indian reservation.
Wind River follows a rookie FBI agent (Olsen) who partners with a mysterious game tracker (Renner) for a deep dive into the community in search of the girl’s killer. Judging by the new clip, the unlikely duo’s pursuit reveals ominous secrets harbored by the locals, which seemingly come to light along the pair’s bullet-riddled journey.
Sheridan debuted the project earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival; it went on to become his third consecutive film to screen at Cannes in May, where it received enthusiastic reviews from movie critics among the Un Certain Regard selection, the same section in which Hell or High Water premiered last year ahead of scoring four Oscar nominations (including one for Best Picture). Wind River has additionally garnered light Oscar buzz on the awards trail thus far, particularly for Renner and Olsen’s performances.
Also like Hell or High Water before it, Wind River is set for theatrical release in late summer, currently scheduled to bow at domestic locations on Aug. 4. In the interim, watch the film’s new trailer above.
