One war finishes, but the fight is still on.
Avengers: Infinity War has officially wrapped production, a rep for Marvel Studios confirmed to EW. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo announced the news on social media with a comical photo of Joe lying on the ground out of sheer exhaustion at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta. “One down,” the brothers wrote of what began production on Jan. 23 of this year.
Now it’s time for part two, as both this film and Avengers 4 are shooting consecutively.
When the Phase 3 lineup was first announced, Marvel revealed the next two Avengers films would bear the subtitles Infinity War – Part 1 and Infinity War – Part 2. Last year, however, plans changed. Now the third one is simply Avengers: Infinity War and the fourth remains untitled. At the same time, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige described both films as working together towards the “culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe as started in May of 2008 with the release of Iron Man 1.”
Plot details on Infinity War are still under wraps, but we know earth’s mightiest heroes will encounter Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and the Guardians of the Galaxy as they take on Thanos (a CG-ed Josh Brolin), who’s after the Infinity Stones. The ensemble cast is immense: Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) are among the actors confirmed to appear.
The end of production comes shortly before Disney’s live-action movie panel at the D23 Expo in California, where fans have already spotted a Thanos statue erected on the convention floor.
The Expo will be followed a week later with a 90-minute Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Here’s hoping the powers that be will reward us with first looks.
Avengers: Infinity War is scheduled for theaters on May 4, 2018. The sequel will bow the following year, on May 3, 2019.
