It’s easy to forget that before he was James Bond, Daniel Craig was just a really good actor on the rise. He’s still flexing those chops on stage with productions like Othello with David Oyelowo and as a low-key Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens, but it’s hard to imagine him doing anything but parkouring and taking out terrorists.
Thankfully, there’s Logan Lucky (out Aug. 18), director Steven Soderbergh’s return to both feature films and heist movies. The story riffs on some of the tropes he established with his own Ocean’s Eleven, casting a bunch of low-budget thieves as the crew. Leading the charge are Channing Tatum and Adam Driver as brothers Jimmy and Clyde Logan, respectively. They’re planning to rob Charlotte Motor Speedway, but they need the help of incarcerated safe cracker Joe Bang (Craig).
As you’ll be able to see in the clip from Logan Lucky above, Craig is doing something completely new for him, and he seems to be having a ton of fun as the smartest guy in a group where that bar’s pretty low. It’s a delight for fans of his who knew him back when.
