The New Mutants is getting some new blood. EW has confirmed that Alice Braga has joined the cast of Fox’s X-Men spin-off about a group of young mutants grappling with their powers.

The Queen of the South and Elysium actress will portray Cecilia Reyes, a doctor with abilities and secrets of her own. Braga fills a void left by Rosario Dawson, who departed the project for undisclosed reasons.

A Fox spokesperson declined to comment on Dawson’s exit, and a rep for Dawson did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Braga’s New Mutants costars include Anya Taylor-Joy as the sorceress Magik, Maisie Williams as the lycanthrope Wolfsbane, and Henry Zaga as the solar-powered Sunspot.

The Fault in Our Stars helmer Josh Boone is directing and co-writing New Mutants, and he has said it will have a different tone than most superhero movies.

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” he told EW last month. “There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news about Braga replacing Dawson.
