The last thing you need when starting over post-breakup in your 40s is your ex and three other guys living under your roof. But for Reese Witherspoon’s Alice Kinney in the new Home Again trailer, the unconventional situation is what she requires for a fresh start.

In the film, written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of Nancy Meyers, Alice moves back home to Los Angeles with her two young daughters after she separates from her husband (played by Michael Sheen). On the night of her 40th birthday, a time for her to “act out,” she meets a handsome young stud and, one thing leading to another, she impulsively lets him and two other aspiring filmmakers temporarily crash in her guest house.

Further complicating matters is the romance she finds while enduring the surprise return of her ex.

“I connected to the role on many levels,” Witherspoon told EW’s sister site PEOPLE. “I’ve been a single mom before and I’ve been divorced before. The idea that I could give women, who are at a crossroads in their life, hope was really what drew me to the project.”

Home Again also features Candice Bergen, Nat Wolff, Pico Alexander, and Jon Rudnitsky. The film opens in theaters on Sep. 8.
