Emma Stone, Steve Carell square off in first Battle of the Sexes trailer
Emma Stone is serving up what appears to be a spot-on portrayal of tennis legend Billie Jean King in the first trailer for the upcoming comedy Battle of the Sexes.
Fox Searchlight debuted the first preview of the film Tuesday morning, teasing the film’s comical reframing the run-up to the notoriously contentious real-life match between King and ex-champion Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell), which became one of the most-watched sporting events in television history in 1973.
The new clip also offers an extended glimpse at the performance of Sarah Silverman, who plays the late Gladys Heldman — founder of World Tennis magazine and staunch supporter of King’s endeavors, which “sparked a global conversation on gender equality, spurring on the feminist movement,” according to a press release.
Battle of the Sexes‘ official synopsis continues, explaining that King was “trapped in the media glare,” while noting the match’s participants “were on opposite sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past.”
Directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton (Little Miss Sunshine), the film also stars Andrea Riseborough, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming, Elisabeth Shue, Natalie Morales, and Fred Armisen, among others.
“This was a really important and serious time in the women’s liberation movement, and it was one of the first times that a political issue was acted out in the circus-like atmosphere,” Dayton told PEOPLE of making the movie, which saw Stone gaining 15 pounds of muscle mass to play the role of King. “It just felt incredibly relevant to today’s time.”
Battle of the Sexes swings into theaters Sept. 22. Watch the film’s new trailer above and scroll on for its teaser poster.
