In writer-director Jackson Stewart’s horror film Beyond the Gates, Chase Williamson and Graham Skipper play brothers John and Gordon, who make the terrible mistake of starting to play a VHS game they find at their missing father’s video store. What ensues is akin to a gore-drenched Jumanji, as the siblings and Gordon’s girlfriend Margot (Brea Grant) attempt to complete the game while the death toll bloodily rises. Beyond the Gates costars Barbara Crampton, Matt Mercer, Justin Welborn, Sara Malakul Lane, Henry LeBlanc, and Jesse Merlin as a baroquely weird store owner.

“Steve Scarlata, my co-writer, who produced Jodorowsky’s Dune, he pitched me this idea of a VCR board game that opens another dimension,” Stewart told EW last year. “I said, ‘That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard. We have to start writing on that today.’ We started outlining it that afternoon and we were shooting about 11 months from when we first started writing.”

Scream Factory is releasing Beyond the Gates on Blu-ray and DVD, May 2, with a host of bonus features, including four audio commentaries, deleted scenes, the short film “Sex Boss,” and a premiere Q&A hosted by Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon. There’s also a behind-the-scenes featurette, which you can see exclusively above, where the cast explains how a good dose of heart (as in emotions, not the organ) make this movie different from other horror films.
