UPDATE: Disney has released official video of Depp’s surprise visit, which you can see above.

EARLIER: Jack Sparrow is back, only this time he’s stumbled into the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.

Guests enjoying the floating attraction Wednesday at the California theme park soon realized that the mechanical swashbuckler dramatically gestating with his sword wasn’t actually mechanical, but really Johnny Depp in a surprise appearance in full Pirates of the Caribbean garb. “Everyone was surprised, shocked and excited to see him,” a witness told E! News. “He acted exactly like his character in the movies.”

Riders shot video of Depp’s appearance and posted it to social media. “Life is complete!” one park-goer tweeted.

At night, Depp’s Captain Jack appeared again shouting to his adoring public from the balcony above the ride’s entrance. “Don’t tell anyone I’m here,” he told the gathering crowd.

This surprise pop-in comes as Depp’s next on-screen reprisal in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales heads for theaters. In the fifth installment of the Disney franchise, Jack is on the run from the ghostly Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who’s out for revenge on the young pirate who led to his demise. (Yup, that would be Jack.)

The drunkard captain of the Black Pearl’s only hope is finding the Trident of Poseidon, a mystical artifact capable of commanding the seas. But he’ll need the help of Will Turner’s son, Henry (Brenton Thwaites), and an astronomer named Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario).

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales arrives in theaters on May 29.
