Two decades ago, Will Smith was coming off the back-to-back blockbusters Independence Day and Men in Black when the Wachowskis approached him to play a butt-kicking hacker hero in a little movie called The Matrix. Skeptical they could pull it off, Smith went on to star in Wild Wild West, which proved to be a major flop, while Keanu Reeves famously plugged in as Neo.

Now we finally have a glimpse of what The Matrix would have looked like starring Smith, thanks to a mashup trailer from YouTube user The Usual Suspect. Incorporating footage from such films as I, Robot and I Am Legend, the video swaps Reeves for Smith with surprisingly few seams.

Watch the re-edited trailer above as you ponder whether Smith “would have absolutely messed up The Matrix,” as he once told Wired.
