'Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie' opens June 2 in theaters nationwide
Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch lend their voices to a pair of kooky pranksters in the new trailer for DreamWorks’ Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.
The clip, which premiered Wednesday morning, teases the first big screen appearance of the titular character, an overbearing school principal who, thanks to the work of two unruly students (Hart, Middleditch), transforms into an unorthodox superhero who fights crime — and his own intellectual shortcomings — clad in nothing but a cape and a pair of white underwear.
Ed Helms voices Captain Underpants, a character adapted from Dav Pilkey’s popular book series first published between 1997 and 2015, in the David Soren-directed picture. Jordan Peele, Kristen Schaal, and Nick Kroll have supporting roles.
“[Helms] has managed to tap into the sheer stupidity of Captain Underpants,” Soren previously told EW. “He’s a delusional superhero who thinks he’s got all kinds of powers and has literally zero ability beyond just that of a middle-aged man.”
Referencing the film’s protagonists, he continued: “The lovely thing is that we have two creative boys at the center of this thing, so anything they dream up really is something we can just lean into heavily. It constantly keeps the story feeling like it’s been made by two fourth graders, as opposed to me.”
