The match is set. Emma Stone and Steve Carell’s tennis dramedy Battle of the Sexes will hit theaters Sept. 22, Fox Searchlight Pictures announced Tuesday.
Starring Stone as Billie Jean King and Carell as Bobby Riggs, the film centers on the infamous 1973 showdown that pitted the No. 2 ranked female player against a macho, trash-talking former champ. Directed by husband-and-wife filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), Battle is to explore the on- and off-court drama of the match as well as its cultural impact.

Battle of the Sexes is slated to open against the Lego ninja movie Ninjago, the firefighter drama Granite Mountain, the horror flick Friend Request, and the period drama Victoria and Abdul.
