If you are looking for a darkly entertaining crime thriller then you could do much worse than check out E.L. Katz’s 2013 directorial debut, Cheap Thrills. And, judging by its trailer, we look forward to saying similarly good things about Katz’s follow-up, Small Crimes.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as a disgraced former cop named Joe Denton who, after serving time for the attempted murder of a District Attorney, returns home looking for redemption. An embarrassment to his parents and abandoned by his ex-wife, it seems things can’t get much worse. But then Joe finds himself trapped in the mess he left behind, caught in the cross fire between a crooked sheriff, the vengeful DA, and a mafia kingpin who knows too much.

Katz’s film boasts a terrific cast which also includes Molly Parker, Robert Forster, Gary Cole, and actor-director Macon Blair whose own recent thriller I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore is also definitely worth checking out.

Small Crimes premieres April 28 on Netflix. Watch the film’s — expletive-featuring — trailer, above.
