See how a young Jack Sparrow made a ghostly enemy
“I once knew a Spaniard named something in Spanish,” Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow recalls in the new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. But it turns out this moment was what made an enemy of the ghostly Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.
In the new footage, which premiered on Ellen Thursday, Disney lovers learn that Salazar was once out to eliminate all pirates, but everything changed when he met Jack as a boy. While chasing him through the Devil’s Triangle, Salazar and his crew were killed, but his rage gave him new life as a vengeful ghost, as he says.
Now a grown man, the legendary, albeit sloshed pirate is on the run for his life. Salazar and his crew seek to snuff him out, with Jack’s only hope being the mystical artifact known as the Trident of Poseidon. To get it, he teams up with an astronomer, Carina Smyth (The Maze Runner‘s Kaya Scodelario), and a sailor in the Royal Navy, Henry (Gods of Egypt‘s Brenton Thwaites).
Elsewhere in the footage, we see Jack’s search for the Black Pearl, ghost sharks (yes, ghost sharks), and the return of Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).
Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg direct Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which also stars Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Golshifteh Farahani as the sea-witch Shansa, Stephen Graham as Scrum, David Wenham as Scarfield, and Orlando Bloom returning as William Turner.
