Terry George’s new film The Promise focuses specifically on the Armenian Genocide carried out by the crumbling Ottoman Empire during World War I, and the first trailer gives a glimpse at just how devastating that conflict was.

Oscar Isaac stars as Michael, a promising young medical student who ends up falling for fellow Armenian Ana (Charlotte Le Bon). Unfortunately, Ana is already involved with Chris (Christian Bale), a photojournalist covering the war for the Associated Press.

Very soon, it becomes clear that this love triangle is the least of their problems. As the war drags on, the national mood gets worse and Armenian citizens become the victims of raging hate crimes. Michael, Ana, and Chris must figure out how to navigate this disaster — not only to escape the carnage, but also to figure out how to build a future together.

The Promise hits theaters April 21. Watch the trailer above.
