IFC Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Rebel in the Rye, a biographical drama starring Nicholas Hoult as the enigmatic author J.D. Salinger.

Slated for release in the fall, the film follows Salinger as a young writer struggling to find his voice, experiencing love and war, and ultimately penning the seminal novel The Catcher in the Rye.

Danny Strong (Empire) wrote and directed Rebel, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The cast also includes Kevin Spacey, Sarah Paulson, Zoey Deutch, and Victor Garber.

Speaking to EW last year, at the start of production, Strong drew parallels between Salinger and his most famous character. “He was in many ways like Holden Caulfield,” Strong said. “There’s a rebellious streak and a very interesting, dynamic way of how he looked at the world. He was very driven to be a writer. He really wanted it so bad, and then when he got it, he ultimately didn’t want it anymore.”

Variety first reported the news.
