Watch Beauty and the Beast come to life in new behind-the-scenes video
In a new behind-the-scenes video, the makers of the new live-action Beauty and the Beast offer a look at taking the animated classic out of the realm of ink and paint and into the real world.
Emma Watson, who plays Belle, and director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) guide us through the village she’s yearning to escape and the enchanted castle she, uh, is also yearning to escape, at least until she comes to see the softer side of the Beast (played by Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens.)
We also get a look at the human versions of Beast’s court of living objects, with a group photo of Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Ewan McGregor as Lumier, Audra McDonald as Garderobe (the singing wardrobe), Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as feather-duster Plumette — along with Stanley Tucci as a new character, the dentally-challenged harpsichord Cadenza.
In an interview with EW, Condon says Watson has brought new elements to her version of bookish Belle, a character who was always defying the expectations of her fellow villagers. The March 17 movie will delve deeper into her personality, the history of her family, and her resistance to what she knows is wrong.
“She is a character in an animated movie, so it is a question of taking these characters and putting them into this extra dimension, putting them into a live-action context, which means adding levels of psychology and nuance, and updating it,” Condon says.
Check back to EW.com all this week. We’ve got more surprises in the enchanted cabinet.
