The new horror anthology XX features an eye-catching list of filmmakers, including Annie Clark (a.k.a. singer-songwriter St. Vincent), Roxanne Benjamin (Southbound), former Rue Morgue magazine editor Jovanka Vuckovic, and animator Sofia Carrillo. But the name likely to get horror fans most excited is Karyn Kusama, the director of 2009’s Jennifer’s Body and last year’s unforgettable The Invitation, about a dinner party which goes badly awry.

Kusama’s tale is called “Her Only Living Son” and stars Christina Kirk as a single mother with a, let us say, very strange child.

“My short film is both a loving homage and a speculative fiction,” Kusama said in her director’s statement. “‘Her Only Living Son’ imagines a parallel outcome to the classic Roman Polanski film Rosemary’s Baby. Over the years, I have come to deeply admire that titanic film’s relationship to stories of domestic violence and entrapment, and I appreciate that we are asked to sympathize with such a fragile main character.”

XX costars Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool, Angela Trimbur, and Sheila Vand. The film is released in theaters and on VOD Feb. 17.
