Cars 3 star Owen Wilson to act as Grand Marshal for Daytona 500
Lightning McQueen is headed to the Daytona 500.
Cars 3 star Owen Wilson is set to serve as Grand Marshal at the 59th Annual Daytona 500 on Feb. 26. The voice behind Lightning McQueen will deliver the iconic “Drivers, start your engines line” to the competitors at NASCAR’s most prestigious event.
Wilson follows in a long line of A-list actors who have previously acted as the race’s Grand Marshal, including his Wedding Crashers costar Vince Vaughn, Ben Affleck, and Matthew McConaughey.
For Cars 3, Wilson is once again getting behind the wheel to voice the legendary race car, who this time around will be facing his own racing mortality.
“McQueen is not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in Cars 1,” director Brian Fee shared with EW earlier this month. “He’s in the middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age. He’s looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be able to do forever.”
Cars 3 races into theaters on June 16.
