Patrick Stewart voicing poop emoji in The Emoji Movie
Acclaimed actor and international treasure Sir Patrick Stewart has played some pretty iconic roles over the years, from Shakespeare characters to Star Trek’s Captain Picard and X-Men’s Professor Charles Xavier. Now, the accomplished Stewart can add a new role to his lengthy resume: poop.
That’s right: Sony Pictures Animation has announced that Stewart is set to voice the poop emoji in the upcoming Emoji Movie. Exact character details have yet to be announced, but Stewart’s emoji appears to be quite suave — or at least as suave as a literal piece of poop can be.
T.J. Miller is already set to star as an unconventional emoji named Gene, who, unlike his digital cohorts, has multiple facial expressions. Along with his friend Hi-5 (voiced by James Corden) and a code-breaker named Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer), he sets out on an adventure to try to figure out why he’s been cursed with such expression.
Sony also announced that Maya Rudolph is joining the cast as Smiler, along with Jennifer Coolidge as Gene’s mother, Mary Meh, and Jake T. Austin as Alex.
“When you’re trying to make an animated movie, the best thing is to find that familiar thing everyone’s familiar with but no one really thinks about in this way,” director Tony Leondis told EW in December. “From my niece to my grandmother, they send emojis. It connects us. In this technological world, we still find ways to connect as human beings, and I think that’s what emojis do.”
The Emoji Movie will hit theaters on Aug. 4.
