Although he isn’t the main focus of Suicide Squad, Jared Leto’s Joker is one of the most colorful parts of David Ayer’s superhero film. Even though the character has been played on screen many times before, Leto’s rendition manages to stand out, not least because of his assortment of crazy tattoos. One of this Joker’s most notable tattoos is the inscription of the word “damaged” across his forehead. In a recent interview with Empire, Ayer explained the in-story origin for that particular mark — and it has to do with the graffiti’d Robin costume seen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
“Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum,” Ayer said. “It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”
It’s unclear whether this plot will appear in later DC Extended Universe films. Ayer made sure to clarify, “this is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection.”
