Chloe Moretz to star in live-action The Little Mermaid for Universal
Chloe Moretz is ready to make a splash. The Kick-Ass and If I Stay star is set to play the title role in The Little Mermaid, Universal’s live-action adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, EW has confirmed.
Richard Curtis, the screenwriter of Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral, is in talks to pen the latest draft of the script.
Produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title, the film does not currently have a director. Sophia Coppola had been attached but departed over creative differences earlier this year. Screenwriters Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands), Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey), and Abi Morgan (Shame) worked on previous versions of the script.
Details have yet to emerge about how the filmmakers will approach Andersen’s classic story of a mermaid who saves a prince from drowning and then makes a Faustian bargain to live on land and try to win his heart. The tale has been adapted many times, most famously as a Disney animated musical in 1989.
Moretz recently wrapped filming Neighbors 2 and November Criminals, and she’ll next be seen in The 5th Wave.
