Grammys draws biggest audience since 2014
CBS has something to smile about this morning: Sunday’s night broadcast of the 2017 Grammy Awards was the award show’s most-watched telecast since 2014.
According to the network, the 59th Annual Grammy Awards drew in 26.05 million viewers and 7.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. These number are up 4 percent and 1 percent, respectively, from last year’s ceremony, which was viewed by 25 million, making it the lowest-rated telecast in six years.
However, this year’s show couldn’t best the 2014 broadcast, which scored 28.5 million viewers. At the time, that was the Grammys second-largest audience in 21 years.
So far, the Grammys look like another bright spot when it comes to award shows, which have been losing viewers in recent years. Similarly, the this year’s Golden Globes, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, had its second-highest audience in a decade. Conversely, the 2016 Emmy Awards, which aired in September, hit all-time low numbers.
Hosted by James Corden, “music’s biggest night” saw Adele win all five of the awards for which she was nominated. The night’s other highlights included Beyoncé’s breathtaking nine-minute performance, Chance the Rapper winning both Best New Artist and Best Rap Album, and a politically charged performance from A Tribe Called Quest.
