Well, he’s done it again! On Monday morning, Christian Slater received his second consecutive nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes for his work on USA’s Mr. Robot. Last year, he also took home the trophy for playing the titular character on the techno-thriller, which costars Rami Malek, who was also nominated this year.

Before he jumped on a flight from Los Angeles to return to New York, EW caught with the 47-year-old actor to talk about his nomination, who he’s looking forward to seeing at this year’s awards show, and, more importantly, when he’s heading back to work on Mr. Robot.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Congratulations on your Golden Globe nomination.

CHRISTIAN SLATER: Thank you! This is certainly a wonderful call to get, and we were all really surprised and very excited. It’s a good way to start the day.

How does it compare to learning you got the nomination last year?

Look, last year, that was shocking. I fell out of bed, then. That’s the tradition, I guess. I fell out of bed one more time. It’s a great experience. It’s wonderful! I love the HFPA. I couldn’t be happier for Rami [Malek], some of the other nominees. I love John Travolta. There were a lot of wonderful performances this year and to be included in such a category with such wonderful people is more than I could’ve ever anticipated or imagined.

Have you had a chance to speak to Sam [Esmail] or anyone else in the cast yet?

Well, it’s early. I’m in Los Angeles. I texted Rami, but I haven’t heard back from him. I just texted him congratulations.

How do you plan on celebrating today?

Well, we’re flying back to New York and gosh, I don’t know. I called family and woke everybody up. My wife and I are here and we’re just giddy and beside ourselves and very excited.

Your Heathers costar Winona Ryder was also nominated for her work on Stranger Things. Are you looking forward to reuniting with her on the night at the awards?

I am so over the moon for her. I really am so thrilled and couldn’t be any more excited. I haven’t seen her in so long and to see her in this capacity at this event, it’ll make for a nice photo.

Have you had a chance to watch Stranger Things?

Yeah, she’s amazing in it. Her performance is stunning. I mean, the kids, the homage to the ’80s and all of those aspects, I was incredibly charmed by it and I’m excited that show has garnered the attention it has as well. It’s very, very exciting.

Are you excited about any of the other nominees?

Honestly, I don’t know everyone. Oh, John Lithgow [nominated for The Crown], I’ve been a huge fan of his my entire life, ever since The World According to Garp. I remember him in that movie and him just being an actor who always stunned me and I’m just thinking about all his performances right now, like Buckaroo Banzai — performances I grew up with as a kid. He’s certainly one of the reasons that I wanted to be an actor.

Is there anything else you want to add this morning?

Hey, man, I’m just excited and very happy and want to spread the love and the joy as much as possible throughout the day. I’m very excited about the year ahead and can’t wait to get back to work.

Do you know when you’re supposed to get back to work on season 3?

April 10th is the start date. I know Rami and I are both getting ready to get back in the ring and battle it out for ultimate control.
