Darth Vader, Voldemort, and 7 Other Pop Culture Comparisons to Donald Trump
Negan, The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead star Michael Cudlitz, who plays Sgt. Abraham Ford, drew some comparisons between the then-two presidential frontrunners and characters on his AMC show. "I think Trump would be more like Negan, and Clinton would be more like Rick — kind of go with the political when you can, but not afraid to kill everybody if they had to," he told The Huffington Post. "But Negan’s a little bit of a loose cannon, and Trump is a little bit of a loose cannon, and that’s not me being political. That’s by his own description. So yeah, I think we actually have our Negan and our Rick. And neither one is perfect."
Travis Bickle, Taxi Driver
Robert De Niro has said that he sees a bit of Donald Trump in his Taxi Driver character, Travis Bickle. "What he has been saying is totally crazy, ridiculous, stuff that shouldn't be even — he is totally nuts," the actor said of Trump at the Sarajevo Film Festival. He went on to discuss Taxi Driver, saying when asked by a moderator about Travis Bickle's mental state, "One of the things to me was just the irony at the end [of the movie]. [Bickle] is back driving a cab, celebrated, which is kind of relevant in some way today too... People like Donald Trump, who shouldn't be where he is so... God help us."
Effie Trinket, The Hunger Games
Elizabeth Banks took shots at Donald Trump in her speech at the Democratic National Convention, drawing inspiration from her Hunger Games character. "Some of you know me from The Hunger Games, in which I play Effie Trinket — a cruel, out-of-touch reality TV star who wears insane wigs while delivering long-winded speeches to a violent dystopia," she told the crowd. "So when I tuned in to [the Republican National Convention in] Cleveland last week, I was like, ‘Hey! That’s my act.'"
Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter
Harry Potter fans started pointing out similarities between Donald Trump and Lord Voldemort, inspiring author J.K. Rowling to weigh in on the issue. "How horrible," she tweeted. "Voldemort was nowhere near as bad."
Biff, Back to the Future: Part II
Former presidential hopeful Ted Cruz referenced Back to the Future: Part II when taking on Donald Trump, saying at a press conference, "If anyone has seen the movie Back to the Future: Part II, the screenwriter [Bob Gale] says that he based the character Biff Tannen on Donald Trump: a caricature of a braggadocios arrogant buffoon who builds giant casinos with giant pictures of him everywhere he looks. We are looking, potentially, at the Biff Tannen presidency. I don’t think the people of America want that. I don’t think we deserve that."
That ‘Psycho Girl,’ The Bachelor
While he chose not to name a specific member of Bachelor Nation, Judd Apatow saw similarities between Donald Trump and contestants on The Bachelor. "Is the Trump thing scaring you?" he asked at the South by Southwest premiere of Pee-wee’s Big Holiday. "He’s kind of like the psycho girl on The Bachelor that you don’t want to get kicked out too soon, because she might have sex with somebody in the ocean. But it’s time he doesn’t get the rose."
Vito Corleone, The Godfather
Complete with a font and soundtrack similar to that of The Godfather, a campaign ad taken out against Donald Trump equated the politician with Vito Corleone, the character Marlon Brando played in the famed '70s film.
