Flashback to the 'Save the Last Dance' Premiere
On Jan. 12, 2001, Save the Last Dance arrived in theaters. A dance movie for the ages, the Thomas Carter-helmed flick starred Julia Stiles as Sara, a high school student with Juilliard dreams. As she deals with the tragedy of her mother’s death, she meets a girl at her new school named Chenille (future superstar Kerry Washington) and is introduced to Chenille’s dreamy brother Derek (1990s staple Sean Patrick Thomas). A dancey love story ensues, making Save the Last Dance just as beloved more than a decade later. In honor of the movie’s 15th anniversary, look back on the original 2001 premiere and all the questionable fashion choices that came with it.
