The Must List: What's Hot for the Week of November 15, 2009
STAR TREK on DVD
There are several DVD versions of J.J. Abrams' near flawless update, complete with extras like deleted scenes. But we're all about the limited-edition gift sets, with digital and Blu-ray copies and a scale model of the Enterprise. It's nerdvana!
Call it ''Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Site'' — Jimcarrey.com is a wonder of a Web venture. On the opening page, a hot-air balloon floats in a field of absurdist symbols like a bird with Carrey's head tweeting his Twitter feed. Click in one spot, and the scene shifts to a Wonka-esque version of Toronto, with a moose on a building. An engrossing oddity, the site does what few other celeb pages can: It keeps us interested.
THE JOHN DORE TELEVISION SHOW on IFC
Dore plays a dope who pesters real pros in a mockumentary sitcom that's funny because it happens to other people.
FAKE AP STYLEBOOK on Twitter
The faux guide is chock-full of funny copy rules like ''Use The Incredible Hulk the first time in piece, then just Hulk.'' Incredible, indeed.
SCOTT WOLF on V
In ABC's alien series, the forever-young Wolf (seriously, who is his facialist?) plays ambitious reporter Chad Decker, who's willing to trade journalistic ethics for a scoop about beautiful lead lizard-person Anna (Morena Baccarin). Wolf is fantastic at registering Chad's inner struggle, coloring the role in some compelling shades of gray.
''UNDO IT'', CARRIE UNDERWOOD
Underwood's latest chick-power anthem (co-written by Idol judge Kara DioGuardi) puts someone on notice: ''You stole my happy/You made me cry/Took the lonely and took me for a ride.'' Girl, we hear you.
PIRATE RADIO soundtrack
Best mixtape ever. Duffy is the rare current artist amid this expertly picked slew of retro jams like the Who's ''My Generation'' and Otis Redding's ''These Arms of Mine.'' There's not a single miss in the bunch.
LAST WORDS, by George Carlin
If anybody has the final say on Carlin, it's the late comic himself, who collaborated with pal Tony Hendra on a raw autobiography that does indeed give him his last words (seven of which we can't repeat).
GIGBOX for Android
This app is for all you hardcore concertgoers. Looking for, say, an upcoming Lady Gaga event? Gigbox allows you to easily search for concerts in your area, no GPS required. But that's just the beginning. The app also gives you info on the artists, provides directions to the venue, and then lets you chat live with other fans rocking the box.
Danny DeVito on IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA
Has there ever been a more inspired ''stunt'' casting? Probably. Has there ever been a funnier one? Not a chance. —Seth F.
There will never be another Blue Album or Pinkerton. If you can accept that, Raditude has got some of the catchiest, most fun music Weezer has produced since those landmark albums. Just crank it on in your car on a Saturday night with your friends, and try to be in a bad mood. —Arun
Rico Rodriguez on MODERN FAMILY
As preternaturally mature Manny, Rodriguez brings the cute — but never cloying — to ABC's comedy hit. —Daniel F.
Smithsonian HD Channel's SKYVIEW series
Just discovered it...talk about taking a vacation on your couch! —Cvisca
SAINTHOOD, Tegan and Sara
Adorable, as always, and finally back with a new CD. Clearly, the top choice as everyone's favorite Canadians. —Joanna
