Stars' Worst Concert Mishaps
A May 2016 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon almost went perfectly for Meghan Trainor, but a last-minute slip-up had the singer on the floor. Trainor made it through her performance of the single “Me Too” without error, even nailing two dance breaks in some very high heels. However, right when the performance ended and Trainor was walking back to her mic stand, the singer lost her footing and fell on her back. Thankfully, host Jimmy Fallon helped downplay the tumble by laying on the ground next to her before helping her up and throwing to commercial.
Beyonce is a consummate professional, but even she can’t avoid the complications that come along with live shows. While singing “Halo” in Montreal, Queen B got her famous hair stuck in a fan. Being the master that she is, Bey continued singing while her team struggled to untangle her locks. When she was finally freed, the audience cheered.
Kravitz fans got a lot more of the singer than they bargained for at a show in Stockholm in 2015. During his very first song, Kravitz split his leather pants, and his jumping around eventually led to his… ahem …. little Lenny popping out. The “Are You Gonna Go My Way” singer quickly shuffled off stage to change, and then owned up to the slip-up to a giddy crowd.
Apparently, robots are finally rising up and attacking, starting with Enrique Iglesias. The singer used a drone during his concerts in 2015, often grabbing it as it buzzed around, to show the audience his point of view from the stage. At his show in Tijuana, though, Iglesias reached for the wrong part of the drone and sliced his hand. Against medical advice to the contrary, he continued the concert for another 30 minutes in a bloody T-shirt.
Justin Bieber was just beginning his problematic behavior during his 2012 Believe Tour. In the middle of one of the shows on the tour, Bieber vomited onstage while performing his song "Out of Town Girl." The singer still completed the show and even did an encore. Afterwards, he jokingly tweeted that milk was a bad choice.
During his performance of "Adorn" at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, Miguel attempted to jump from the stage to a platform in the middle of the audience. He made the jump, but wound up hitting two women in the face, basically landing on one of them. In the moment, Miguel put his arm around a woman that he thought he had hit, but the two that he actually struck had disappeared after the incident.
During a 2015 Foo Fighters show in Sweden, lead singer Dave Grohl broke his leg on stage and had to be carried off by paramedics. While in his gurney, Grohl announced that he would be back to complete the performance despite his broken leg. True to his word, Grohl was carried back on stage by paramedics later on and performed as one of the medics held his leg cast up.
Perry was just making it big in 2008 with the release of "I Kissed A Girl," and what better way to celebrate than with some cake? At the end of her performance at the 2008 MTV Latin America Awards, Perry jumped onto a huge cake. The icing made for a slippery situation when the pop star tried to leave the stage, however. She fell multiple times, and in the end resorted to crawling offstage.
5 Seconds of Summer
Usually a band being on fire is a good thing, but not when it’s literal. During a 2015 London show, 5 Seconds of Summer guitarist Michael Clifford accidentally stood too close to the staged pyrotechnics and his hair and face caught fire. Luckily, Clifford was rushed to a hospital, treated for the burns, and has healed since.
Edna Mode said it best in The Incredibles — no capes! Madonna learned that the hard way at the 2015 Brit Awards. During her performance, her backup dancers tried to tear off her large cape while she was on top of a staircase. Unfortunately, Madge came down too. She later revealed that the cape was tied on too tightly, but the designer Giorgio Armani blamed Madonna, saying she insisted on a tie-on cape rather than an easier and safer hook.
Styles has not had the best luck when it comes to his tour performances. The British boy band star seems to be in a habit of getting hit with projectiles while on stage, particularly taking a water bottle to the crotch.
Although Jennifer Lopez’s performance at the 2009 American Music Awards was boxing themed, it left her with more bruises than she was expecting. The singer nailed some impressive choreography while singing "Louboutins," but it was her staircase made of male backup dancers that finally did her in toward the end. JLo fell off the back of one of her dancers and fell hard on her famous derriere. Still, Lopez completed the performance.
The most famous wardrobe malfunction in live music history occurred during the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show. At the end of performing "Rock Your Body," Justin Timberlake reached across Janet Jackson’s top and tore off the piece covering her right breast.
At one of his London shows, Method Man was clearly feeling his performance a little more than the crowd was. During one of his raps, he climbed on a speaker and dove into the audience, but rather than catch him, they let him fall on the ground. Ouch!
Fergie must have confused the last word in the name Black Eyed Peas. During a 2005 show with the band, the singer visibly wet herself on stage. Master of subtlety that Fergie is, she covered up the wet spot by pouring champagne on herself.
On his 2013 tour with Lil’ Wayne, Drake went on stage after tearing his ACL, despite his doctor’s suggestion. While performing “Best I Ever Had,” Drake landed wrong after a jump and collapsed to the ground. He was carried off stage, and Lil’ Wayne came on to diffuse the tension with a little comedy act, saying “[Drake’s] really got a bad knee! I thought that s--t was just on TV,” in reference to his wheelchair-bound Degrassi character.
