10 Biggest Celebrity Scandals of the Decade
WINONA RYDER SHOPLIFTS AT SAKS
On Dec. 12, 2001, Ryder was arrested after shoplifting $5,560 worth of goods from the Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. (Cameras caught the Heathers actress stuffing socks and accessories into a hat.) She was ultimately convicted on counts of felony grand theft and vandalism, sentenced to 480 hours of community service, and required to pay a fine and restitution.
R. KELLY INDICTED, THEN ACQUITTED, ON CHILD PORN CHARGES
Fans were shocked when a low-quality video surfaced in February 2002, allegedly showing Kelly performing sex acts with an underage girl. While the 35-year-old singer denied he was on the tape, Chicago prosecutors subsequently indicted him on 21 counts of child pornography. The case finally went to trial in May 2008, and the singer was acquitted after three weeks of testimony. The scandal had no effect on Kelly's ability to sell albums: All five of his releases since 2002 have gone platinum.
During halftime of the 2004 Super Bowl, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake entertained together, singing a medley of ''All for You,'' ''Rhythm Nation,'' and ''Rock Your Body.'' And just as Timberlake belted out the lyrics ''I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song,'' he pulled off part of Jackson's bustier, revealing her breast and a nipple shield that the entire nation saw for about a second. Timberlake quickly apologized for the so-called ''wardrobe malfunction,'' and again during his acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards, but Jackson — who issued two apologies on her own — declined to attend the ceremony after CBS insisted she apologize a third time on the air. Five years later, the case still hasn't been closed, as an appeal over the fine that was eventually slapped on CBS is still bouncing around the courts.
BRAD PITT ? JENNIFER ANISTON + ANGELINA JOLIE = BRANGELINA
In early 2005, after nearly five years of marriage, Aniston filed for divorce from Pitt, and rumors flew that the sultry Jolie was the reason for the split. Pitt met Jolie on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and while all parties deny she was the cause of the divorce, Jolie did eventually admit that she and Pitt fell in love while working on the movie. The Aniston-Pitt-Jolie love triangle is the Hollywood scandal that keeps on giving — especially to celebrity tabloids and gossip hounds, who continue to report relentlessly on Pitt and Jolie's family life with their six children, and Aniston's adventures on the celebrity dating scene.
MEL GIBSON MELTS DOWN
After being pulled over on suspicion of drinking and driving on July 28, 2006, Gibson uttered the 13 words that would change his life forever: ''F---ing Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.'' He also reportedly called a female officer ''sugar tits,'' though Gibson later denied ever uttering that phrase. The actor-director eventually pleaded no contest to the DUI (and apologized for his ''despicable'' behavior) and received three years' probation and one year of mandated AA meetings.
ISAIAH WASHINGTON FIRED FROM GREY'S ANATOMY
In the fall of 2006, ABC's hit hospital show became caught up in an off-screen drama, when reports leaked about a scuffle between stars Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey, during which Washington allegedly referred to gay costar T.R. Knight as a ''faggot.'' The real fallout came in January 2007, when Washington repeated the gay slur as part of a denial in the pressroom at the Golden Globes. While the actor later issued an apology and shot a PSA for the pro-gay advocacy group GLAAD, Washington was fired from Grey's in June of 2007.
BRITNEY SHAVES HER HEAD
The one-time pop princess hit a rough patch in late 2006 and early 2007, as she dealt with her divorce from Kevin Federline and subsequent custody battle. It was clear the star needed a break when on February 16, 2007 she headed to a Tarzana, Calif., salon and — after asking the owner to shave her head — buzzed her famous locks off herself as paparazzi frantically snapped away outside. While it took two more years for things to settle down (somewhat) for Spears, she's regained much of her music mojo: Her 2008 album, Circus, went platinum.
CHRISTIAN BALE'S TERMINATOR SALVATION ON-SET RANT RELEASED
In February 2009, a profanity-laced audio recording of Terminator star Christian Bale berating Shane Hurlbut, director of photography for the film, hit the web. Although celebrities and other crewmembers from the film defended Bale, the tirade became a viral sensation — and was even set to music as a techno mix that made the round in clubs. Bale later apologized during a radio interview, saying that the outburst was ''inexcusable'' and that he ''acted like a punk.''
JON AND KATE GOSSELIN ANNOUNCE THEIR DIVORCE
After months of media speculation about the state of their marriage, the reality-TV mom and dad announced on the June 22, 2009 episode of their TLC show, Jon & Kate Plus 8, that they'd begun divorce proceedings. The end of their marriage, however, was only the beginning of the he said-she said about money, infidelity, and childcare that followed. The seemingly eternal squabbling that followed did little to maintain the ratings momentum of the once-hot show: While the season five premiere in May nabbed 9.8 million viewers, by the fall the show — which eventually stopped featuring the couple together on camera — dropped back down to the low single digits, and Jon & Kate officially wrapped on November 23, 2009.
CHRIS BROWN ASSAULTS RIHANNA
When the pop couple were a no-show at dress rehearsal for the Grammy Awards on February 8, reports quickly surfaced about an altercation between the pair. Brown was charged with assault and making criminal threats, and at a hearing in LA on June 22, the singer pled guilty to felony assault. (He traded prison time for community service, five years of probation and the order to stay 100 yards from Rihanna, unless at industry events, where that order would be reduced to 10 yards.) In a series of interviews in November, Rihanna revealed disturbing details about the attack, telling ABC's Diane Sawyer, ''I was battered, I was bleeding, I was swollen in my face.''
