BEST: Nicole Kidman

If Nicole Kidman is on a red carpet, it pretty much goes without saying that she’ll make the best-dressed list. To no one’s surprise, the Oscar (and now Emmy!) winner and fashion icon was the cream of the style crop in Calvin Klein by Appointment. In her crystal-embellished pink satin sandals and red silk gown with a full ankle-length skirt, pleated bodice, and glittering silver tie at the neck, the carpet belonged to Kidman.

BEST: Caleb McLaughlin

All of the young gents of Stranger Things are stylish (Noah Schnapp wore Balmain, for crying out loud!) but Caleb McLaughlin is in a class by himself. He kept up his streak of brilliant red carpet appearances when he hit the Emmys carpet wearing this scene-stealing statement jacket by Garçon Couture, in vivid purple floral brocade.

BEST: Shailene Woodley

Nominee (and noted TV-skeptic) Shailene Woodley hit the carpet in a deep green velvet gown by Ralph Lauren. She let the luxe fabric do the talking, leaving her neck bare in the plunging dress and keeping her jewelry otherwise minimal. She pulled her (now-blonde) hair into a low-key low ponytail with pieces in front and sported dark fingernails.

BEST: Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson commanded the spotlight when she stepped out in this Technicolor dream of a dress by American designer Rosie Assoulin. The high-necked rainbow lurex gown had a high neck, cutouts at the waist, and a full pleated skirt. The Westworld star topped off the gleaming look with her hair slicked back.

BEST: Kiernan Shipka

Ever since her Mad Men days, Kiernan Shipka has been the undisputed queen of sophisticated teen red carpet fashion. The 17-year-old Feud: Bette and Joan star brought her style A-game once again in this Grecian-inspired Miu Miu gown, a sweet confection of white tulle dotted with sequins to match its glittering straps. She finished off the look with a slick low ponytail and drop earrings.

BEST: Donald Glover

Donald Glover made history Sunday night when he became the first black director to win an Emmy for directing a comedy series (for his work on Atlanta). It was also a landmark moment in the history of chic menswear, as he accepted the honor wearing this bold purple suit rather than another boring black tux. He gave the standout suit an extra pop with a bright yellow pinstripe pocket square.

BEST: Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys

Credit: Steve Granitz/WireImage

The Americans co-stars and real-life couple Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys dressed to the nines for the second consecutive Emmys in which they were both nominated. Russell wore a textured long-sleeved black J. Mendel dress, her hair in glamorous waves over her shoulder; at her side, Rhys looked sharp in a black J. Mendel tux.

BEST: Gillian Anderson

Gillian Anderson was sweeter than a cupcake in red velvet. She showed off the black lace panel in the back of her fitted dress with her hair in a braided updo, but the best part of the whole look was the glittering rainbow clutch she held at her side.

BEST: Julianne Hough

Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage

Julianne Hough was on-trend on the Emmy red carpet in stunning black tulle Marchesa, with cutouts, an asymmetrical neckline, and hints of millennial pink in the smattering of tulle and feathered flowers across the bodice. She kept her neck bare but wore rings on every finger and small drop earrings, and held a black clutch.

WORST: Jane Fonda

Over the course of her legendary career, Jane Fonda has had countless fabulous fashion moments — this year’s Emmys carpet, however, was not one of them. Her bell-sleeve hot pink dress overwhelmed the star, and neither her hair nor her jewelry helped the look.

WORST: Amanda Crew

Don’t be fooled by the surface area of Amanda Crew’s sparkling gown — more fabric doesn’t mean more coverage. This look left just a little too little to the imagination.
