Black Mirror standout episode 'San Junipero' nabs two Emmy nominations
The Emmys have visited San Junipero.
The ’80s-tinged, neon-drenched fan-favorite Black Mirror episode, in which — spoiler alert! — a pair of women (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis) find each other in a digital afterlife, has garnered a pair of nods from the Television Academy. One nomination is for creator Charlie Brooker, for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special. The other one is more curious, for Outstanding TV Movie. “San Junipero,” clocking in at 61 minutes, is the most conventional TV episode of the five nominees; the only other TV episode nominated in the category, Sherlock‘s “The Lying Detective,” has a more traditional movie-length running time of 89 minutes.
Regardless, Black Mirror‘s unusually heartwarming and optimistic hour devoted to a time-hopping love story has been recognized by the 2017 Emmy Awards. The only other nomination for the Netflix season went to the Bryce Dallas Howard-starring “Nosedive” in the Outstanding Cinematography category. For all three noms, we award the Television Academy five stars.
The 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Stephen Colbert, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live nationwide on CBS.
