Emmy critics have long complained that the awards voters tend to favor tired warhorses over newcomers and underdogs, but that may change this year. New rules, as described in today’s Variety and Hollywood Reporter, call for panels of experts to help pick the semifinalists in the series and lead-acting categories. While under the old system, the membership at large of the TV Academy tended to vote for what was already popular or well-known, the rule change should allow for new blood, especially from perennially overlooked channels like UPN and the WB. In other words, this could finally be the year that, say, Gilmore Girls gets some Emmy love.

Which unheralded but deserving programs and performers would you like to see benefit from the new rules?
