Son of Zorn cast on mixing animation and live action
Squeeze some mythology in with the suburbs and Son of Zorn is born. But if you can’t wrap your mind around all that, you’re not alone. The cast of the upcoming Fox comedy is still working through the mechanics.
Stars Tim Meadows, Cheryl Hines, Johnny Pemberton, executive producer Eric Appel, and showrunner Sally McKenna stopped by EW’s lounge at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday to explain the new live action-animation hybrid comedy.
The series will follow Zorn (Jason Sudeikis), a cartoon Barbarian dad that leaves his war-torn village to re-connect with his moody, non-animated son in a modern day suburban town. With an interesting premise, the cast had to be convinced of how mixing a cartoon with live action would work.
“The first time I heard about it was a group of people on the phone trying to tell me about it,” Hines recalls of her experience being pitched the show. “I had a hard time understanding it until I read the script.”
Along with the modern-meets-historical plot comes questions of what types of stories can be told on the show. “A lot of the stories we do are kind of stories you’d see on traditional shows,” explains McKenna. “He’s solving every day problems.”
“Zorn is going to teach his son how to fight and says, ‘One of us is going to die now,’” adds Hines. “That’s a typical episode where Zorn takes it to a place that no parent should.”
