Comic-Con 2016: Batman Comics writers share their backgrounds
It was all Bat everything at EW’s Con-X on Friday when Tom King, Scott Snyder, and Julie and Shawna Benson talked with EW’s Tim Leong about the myriad Batman related titles in their respective repertoires.
This quartet handles all things Batman, but in their own way. Snyder is working on All Star Batman; the Bensons recently began Batgirl and The Birds of Prey; and King picked up Batman. They’re all hitting Comic-Con to celebrate 77 years of the Caped Crusader.
But they certainly didn’t all arrive in Gotham City in the same fashion. Snyder was a novelist before taking on comics duties, including working on Bruce Wayne’s stories in Batman: Gates of Gotham in 2011. King, one of Snyder’s Batman successors, had an intelligence background with the CIA. Eventually, he uncovered his passion after penning a book at night while being a stay-at-home dad. “I’ve been a counter-terrorist officer, a comic book writer, and a dad, and the dad is the much hardest thing. That’s horrible,” King said.

Meanwhile, the Benson sisters (The 100) worked in a medium more closely related to comics than King (after Shawna stopped working in IT). “We worked in television and we’ve been trying to do that for years,” Julie explained. “But I’ve been reading comics since I remember. My dad collected DC silver age. Coming on to the book was a dream come true. It’s totally different than writing TV in a lot of ways, but it’s totally similar.”
