Plus: The show's stars talk about the Cassidy and Tulip relationship

The first season of Preacher has seen the AMC drama deviate somewhat from the order of the graphic novel and serve as more of an origin story, but future seasons will continue to pull straight from the comics, according to its creator.

While speaking with Darren Franich at the EW lounge at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Garth Ennis — the mind behind the Preacher comic — discussed how the show will use the material from the books going forward. “I think what you’ll see is a lot of stuff from the books, maybe just like season 1, not necessarily in the sequence you’re expecting them,” he said. “But I think you will start to see more and more stuff from the books.”

Bringing Preacher to life has been a long journey for Ennis, but with one season almost in the books, he’s thrilled to see his world finally on the small screen. “It’s been brilliant seeing the whole thing come to life the way it has,” he shared. “Seeing the Saint ride down the street, seeing Jesse meet Cassidy, seeing Tulip do awful things to people, seeing Arseface warbling his way through the episode, it’s just been brilliant.”

A big development toward the end of the first season has been the burgeoning relationship between the two closest people in Jesse’s (Dominic Cooper) life, Cassidy and Tulip. “It’s lovely,” said Joseph Gilgun, who portrays the alcoholic vampire. “It’s quite an unusual relationship with Tulip and Cass in the sense they do kind of jive with each other, but there’s some sort of… I mean she’s very maternal towards him.”

Ruth Negga, who plays Jesse’s tough-as-nails ex, agrees. “I think it was too interesting not to explore,” she said of the Cassidy and Tulip relationship. “I think this kind of dance that they do around each other, I think it is quite sweet actually and I think they’re basically two sides of the same coin.”
