Heading into season 12, Supernatural is somehow just as mysterious as ever. Thanks to a surprise return — and someone getting shot! — in the season 11 finale, there’s plenty to discuss heading into Comic-Con. With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know before Supernatural takes the stage at Sunday’s Comic-Con panel.

Where we left off: Amara and God settled their beef and essentially reunited… in heaven? It’s not exactly clear where they disappeared to. However, what is clear is that Amara decided to give Dean a gift before she left, and that gift is named Mary Winchester. It seems the boys finally have their mother back! Well, that’s only if Sam is still alive. Let’s not forget that season 11 ended with Sam returning to the bunker only to come face-to-face with a Woman of Letters who scares easily. Translation: She shot Sam.

What we know about season 12: So far, season 12 is a bit of a mystery. Other than Misha Collins telling Nerdist, “We’re getting back to the show’s roots,” all we know is that Sam is for sure shot, and Mary is definitely back. In other news, Jeremy Carver is leaving the show and leaving showrunning duties to executive producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb.

Comic-Con burning question: What exactly happened to God and Amara?
