Captain America statue for 75th anniversary: See a first look

They say the traditional one-year anniversary gift is paper, five years is wood, and 15 years is crystal, but what do you get a Nazi-fighting patriotic superhero celebrating his 75th anniversary? A giant statue in his likeness, apparently.

This year marks Captain America’s 75-year milestone, and to celebrate, Marvel has commissioned a 13-foot-tall statue in his honor (and it literally weighs a ton). Marvel will unveil the statue at San Diego Comic-Con this week, where fans can take pictures with it and purchase their own small replicas, but in the meantime, EW has your first look at Steve Rogers in all his bronze glory.

After Comic-Con, bronze Steve will travel east across the country (with Marvel documenting his journey on social media) before settling in his hometown of Brooklyn on Aug. 10. There, the statue will be dedicated and temporary installed in Prospect Park, kicking off with a special screening of Captain America: Civil War in the park. In September, the statue will move to the borough’s Barclays Center before heading to Sunset Park in October.

(In Jack Kirby and Joe Simon’s comics, Steve Rogers was born on the Lower East Side, but the Chris Evans movie version hails from Brooklyn. Which is why the statue bears an appropriate quote from Captain America: The First Avenger: “I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.”)

As part of the 75th anniversary celebration, Cap is also getting an all-new custom comic book that integrates the statue into new storytelling, penned by Marvel writers and artists. The comic will be exclusively available at San Diego Comic-Con and future Captain America events.
