Writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley created one of the most original and energetic comics of the past decade with Scott Pilgrim. Even before it was a big-screen blockbuster starring Michael Cera, Scott Pilgrim effortlessly blended video games, superhero comics, punk rock, and other fragments of nerd culture into a unique mix. In 2014, O’Malley followed up with Seconds, a graphic novel about a girl who finds a magical way to fix her past mistakes. Now, O’Malley is prepping his next graphic novel from Ballantine Books: Worst World.

Much of Worst World is still shrouded in secrecy, but as fans can see from the teaser image above, it looks to feature some more of the punk rock music and aesthetic that has influenced O’Malley’s work since Scott Pilgrim. Set in present-day Los Angeles, Worst World centers around 30-something Benny and 20-something Aubrey, and will be the first in a planned trilogy of graphic novels, each clocking in over 300 pages. O’Malley will once again be teaming with with his partners from Seconds, including art assistant Jason Fischer and colorist Nathan Fairbairn.

O’Malley will be signing copies of the Worst World print at this week’s San Diego Comic Con; fans who are attending can see details here.
