With still more than two months to go before The Big Bang Theory returns, the writers of the CBS comedy played coy at Comic-Con on Friday on whether Sheldon and Amy’s relationship will survive the events of the finale.

Frustrated with the glacial pace at which their relationship is moving, Amy (Mayim Bialik) decided to take some space from Sheldon (Jim Parsons), unaware that he has procured an engagement ring. The big question is when he bought the ring. “The answer will be in the premiere episode of season 9,” executive producer Steve Molaro promised.

But Sheldon and Amy may have some competition. Surprising fans, both Mayim Bialik and Kunal Nayyar made special appearances at the Con—with the latter moderating the writers panel—to read some Amy and Raj fan fiction. “Have you ever read Fifty Shades of Grey? I’m about to introduce you to Fifty Shades of Brown,” Nayyar said, jokingly dubbing them KoothrapAmy.

In all seriousness, Bialik spoke passionately about the “Shamy” relationship.”It feels weird to qualify it like, ‘It’s great,'” Bialik said of kissing her co-star. “Whenever Sheldon and Amy have intimacy, it’s usually very specific. It’s very gently placed.” In fact, the smooch that opened the season finale was shot multiple times as they figured out the best approach. “For everything we do that’s intimate, it’s very crafted. We’re never cavalier about that.”

Despite whatever happens between the duo, we might get more info on Amy’s history in the new season. “She may learn she had a great great uncle who didn’t always play by the rules,” writer Eric Kaplan said, possibly joking, but hopefully not.

In other fun news from the panel, executive producer Chuck Lorre revealed that Sheldon nearly became a criminal during the episode in which he and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) attempted to tour Skywalker Ranch. “In the first ending that got shot, we found out at the end that Sheldon had stolen a lightsaber,” Lorre said. “I was deeply troubled. The character couldn’t commit essentially a felony.”

The Big Bang Theory returns Monday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
