Comic-Con: Matt Smith and TV's 'Brave New Warriors' on unsexy moments
The handsome was on display Thursday afternoon at Entertainment Weekly’s Brave New Warriors Comic-Con panel, moderated by Lynette Rice. Squeals from the audience were expected, of course, but even the panelists seemed completely delighted by each others aesthetics. “I just wanted to speak for the fans and say, ‘Tyler, you are so sexy,'” said Grimm’s David Guintoli to Teen Wolf’s Tyler Posey. Twice.
Okay, so it might have been tongue in cheek. Still, these guys know how to work a room, even if they do get paid to brood, as Guintoli said. Take a look at some of the best moments from EW’s panel with Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), David Guintoli (Grimm), and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead).
On playing iconic characters: Matt Smith said, “It is wonderful to be part of a show that has such a legacy behind it. But it was strange. There was such an uproar because of my age, and everyone was like, ‘He can’t be the Doctor. He’s like 9.'”
On Fan Fiction: “The fan fiction is pretty nuts sometimes. It’s not a downside, but it gets pretty gnarly. Thank you, guys,” said Tyler Posey.
On Smith’s decision to leave Doctor Who: “It’s been wonderful. It’s been a privilege to work on this, but I think, you gotta go, you gotta go,” Smith said, to many shrieks of “no” and “aw” from the audience. “It wasn’t an easy decision to come to, but I don’t know… you can’t play it forever. And look, they’ll get someone amazing.”
What are the unsexy parts of the job? Even though some girls in the audience pre-empted Posey’s answer with shouts of “nothing!” Posey said “I don’t grow any chest hair, but I do have nipple hair … usually one of the executive producers shaves it for me. Steven Yeun managed to make Kit Harington blush when he described how the bugs in Atlanta tend to feast on the warmest parts of the body. For Harington, his one sex scene was, “possibly the most humiliating experience of my life. I broke my ankle at the time so I had to crutch on the set naked … not being able to hide, sort of, anything. And there’s a hundred people just [cocks his head and puts his fist under his chin] … trying not to laugh.” Smith started to tell a story about knowing his lines… but then just concluded, “Doctor Who is not actually a sexy show.”
On how their characters might die… if they had to: DavidGuintoli (or “big D” as the other panelists called him), said, “Whatever it is, it’s got to make me look cool. Something medieval.” Posey said, “Beheaded would be cool, but to fit with my character I think it would have to be going out while saving someone… even a villain.” For Harington, he’d like Jon Snow to meet his inevitable demise in quieter fashion. “Sunday afternoon, peacefully,” he said, adding, “85-years-old, resting his head gently… on a big iron chair.” But Yeun took the cake with an epic, completely impromptu monologue about Glenn’s death: “It would be cool if I was riding a motorcycle. And while I was riding the motorcycle I jump off a ramp and then I kill like 30 walkers and an explosion happens. And my heart can’t take the stress of how awesome it was. There’s still more. And then I park and make sure I put the kickstand down. And then I dig my own grave and fall asleep peacefully.”
