Watch Kobe Bryant talk about his daughter's love of basketball in 2018 interview
During his life, Bryant was a loving father of four girls and shared a close bond with Gianna, the second eldest of his daughters and the one who had dreams of pursuing a career in basketball. During a 2018 visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live, Bryant opened up about the benefits of retirement — mainly, that it allowed him to coach Gianna as she sought to follow in his footsteps.
“She does for sure,” Bryant responded to Kimmel when asked whether Gianna wants to grow up to play in the WNBA.
“The best thing that happens when we go out, fans will come up to me and she’ll be standing next to me and they’ll be like, ‘Hey, you gotta have a boy! You and V gotta have a boy to have somebody to carry on the tradition and the legacy,” Bryant said. “She’s like, ‘Hey, I got this! You don’t need a boy for that.'”
“And I’m like, ‘That’s right! You do. You got this.'”
Kimmel remembered Bryant via Twitter on Sunday with a special message remembering the NBA star’s great love for his girls.
“He was great, charismatic & among the hardest-working athletes ever, but what impressed me most was how deeply-involved Kobe was with his 4 daughters,” Kimmel wrote. “Pray for them, Vanessa, his parents & his fellow passengers’ families on this sad and shocking day. We will never forget you Kobe.”
Bryant and his daughter were on their way to her basketball game when their helicopter crashed. Seven other people who also onboard did not survive.
The accident is currently under investigation by the NTSB and the FAA.
