It’s almost time to meet The Mister.

50 Shades best-selling author E.L. James is getting ready to unveil her new erotic romance next month, which she describes as a “21st century Cinderella,” charting the relationship between British hunk Maxim and the enigmatic Alessia. The author has exclusively shared with EW has a tease of what readers can expect: the back-cover for The Mister, which points to something important in the book. Along with that, EW can debut a brief but crucial excerpt.

The back-cover, which you can see at the bottom of this post, features an image of piano keys, a major motif in The Mister. “I love music, and while I write I listen to a playlist that evolves with the narrative,” James tells EW. “The lead characters in The Mister are also music lovers, and it’s been a delight finding pieces and songs that have inspired me and that resonate with Maxim and Alessia and their story. Many of these pieces feature in the book, and I hope they will inspire and resonate with readers too.”

So what place do piano keys have, exactly, in The Mister? Check out this passage provided exclusively by James:

She shudders and takes a deep breath, forcing a feeling of calm. She stretches her fingers and strokes the keys.

White. Black.

The mere touch soothes her. She wants to savor this precious moment and lose herself in the music.

See the back-cover, which also includes the full synopsis below. The Mister publishes April 16 and is available for pre-order.
