Can you believe?
EW can exclusively announce that Jonathan Van Ness, Queer Eye‘s resident grooming expert, will publish his memoir Over the Top this fall. The multi-hyphenate will begin the book by tracing his upbringing in a small Midwestern town, where he was an easy target and endured years of judgment, ridicule, and trauma — yet none of it crushed his uniquely effervescent spirit.
As publisher HarperOne teases, “Jonathan shares never-before-told secrets and reveals sides of himself that the public has never seen. JVN fans may think they know the man behind the stiletto heels, the crop tops, and the iconic sayings, but there’s much more to him than meets the Queer Eye.”
“HarperOne seeks to publish authors whose lives inspire and Jonathan Van Ness embodies that mission,” HarperOne President and Publisher Judith Curr said in a statement. “His memoir will move readers and offer a unique and much-needed testament to the power of staying true to yourself.”
Added Hilary Swanson, editor: “Jonathan Van Ness has made millions of people all over the world smile, embrace their uniqueness, and own their individuality. Now it’s time for us to return the favor as he reveals his own truth. Jonathan’s journey is at times hilarious, at times harrowing–and always refreshingly honest. I could not be more proud to help share his incredible story and show readers how to take their own struggles and turn them into something beautiful.”‘
In addition to his work on the Emmy-winning Queer Eye, Van Ness is known for hosting the Getting Curious podcast and helming the web series parody Gay of Thrones, for which he received an Emmy nomination last year for Outstanding Short-Form Variety Series.
Over the Top publishes Sept. 24 and is available for pre-order.
