Tom Hanks has taken a break from the camera to put fingers to keys.

The Oscar-winning actor is gearing up for the release of his upcoming short story collection, Uncommon Type: Some Stories. Featuring 17 different stories, the book demonstrates Hanks’ heartwarming sensibility and his versatility as a writer: It covers everything from the immigrant experience to torrid romantic affairs to the sudden trappings of celebrity.

In the above Uncommon Type trailer, exclusively obtained by EW, we see Hanks brainstorming the old-fashioned way: Writing away on a typewriter, committed to his process. He’s also, in the Hanks-ian spirit, impressively relaxed about the pending reaction to his book: “If you read it, I hope you enjoy it,” he says calmly.

Uncommon Type: Some Stories hits shelves on Oct. 17. You can pre-order the book here.
