For the past year, digital comics platform Comixology has been releasing sets of trading cards featuring popular comic book creators from Mike Mignola to Margaret Atwood. Now that this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International is coming, Comixology is getting ready to release a third and final set of “Comic Book All-Stars” cards. This time, however, they got a special assist from director Kevin Smith.
As with previous sets, this third series will feature an array of current comic creators, from Heathen‘s Natasha Alterici to Scott Pilgrim‘s Bryan Lee O’Malley. But there will also be a six-person subset of “Heavy Hitters,” a personally curated list of Smith’s favorite comic stars.
“I love comics. Whether I pick them up digitally or in print, they are one of my favorite things to read. I’m honored to spotlight some of today’s most talented creators with this selection of ‘Heavy Hitters,’ as part of Comixology’s All Star Trading cards for SDCC 2017,” Smith said to EW in a statement. “I can’t wait to get a set!”
Smith’s Heavy Hitters are Laura Allred, Becky Cloonan, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Emma Ríos, and Bruce Timm. Each one of those cards comes with fun facts. Lee’s, for example, reveals that he was studying to become a doctor at Princeton before he switched careers to comics and also calls out some of his more notable works like Batman: Hush.
Smith’s collaboration with Comixology will expand to SDCC itself, where he will host a Comic Book Movie Trivia panel produced by IMDb and Comixology on Thursday, July 20. Smith will moderate the panel of pop culture experts, while Comixology CEO David Steinberger will help judge.
“We pulled out all the stops for our third and final Comic Book All Stars collection featuring the star creators of comics and graphic novels,” Steinberger told EW in a statement. “I couldn’t be happier celebrating the incredible and talented people who craft the stories we love and encourage fans to stop by our booth to collect them all.”
Check out the full set of cards below. SDCC attendees can pick one up at designated times at Comixology’s booth (#2547) over the course of the Comic-Con (July 20-23) weekend.
